Vintage Relax-A-Cizor Machine (NOT TESTED)

The Relax-A-Cizor was marketed as a passive exercise and weight-loss machine that used electrical impulses to stimulate muscle contractions. The user would strap electrode pads to various parts of the body, and the dials on the control panel were used to adjust the intensity of the electric current. Promoted in beauty salons and advertised as an easy way to achieve fitness or "reduce girth" while relaxing, the device sold over 400,000 units in the US during the 1950s and 1960s. It even had celebrity endorsements, such as from Doris Day. Despite claims of safety and effectiveness, the device caused a multitude of health problems, including muscle shocks, difficulty swallowing, cramps, miscarriages, and the aggravation of pre-existing conditions like epilepsy and hernias. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took legal action against the company. In April 1970, a US District Judge declared the device dangerous and permanently enjoined its sale and manufacture in interstate commerce. The FDA ruled in 1971 that any existing devices could only be used under the supervision of a physician.
