Item Description

This book is a major monograph titled "Seydou Keïta: Photographs, Bamako, Mali 1948–1963," published by Steidl in 2011. It is a comprehensive collection of over 400 black-and-white portraits by the renowned Malian photographer Seydou Keïta. The book draws from an expanded archive to showcase the height of Keïta’s productivity in his downtown Bamako studio. It features portraits of a diverse range of people dressed in elaborate textiles and posed against lushly patterned backdrops.

Known as the "father of African photography," Keïta began his career at age 14 with a Kodak Brownie. Between 1948 and 1962, he operated Bamako's most successful portrait studio, capturing a nation on the cusp of independence from French colonial rule. He later served as Mali’s official government photographer from 1962 until his retirement in 1977.
