Named in honor of General Alexander E. Anderson, US Army, who served in both World Wars.
She operated as a troopship until 1950 when she entered the Military Sea Transportation Service as a troopship, supporting the Korean conflict.
The ship was highly decorated.
She was 623 feet long x 76 feet wide and weighted 17,833 gross tons, with a cruising speed of 19 knots.
She was decommissioned in 1958, entering the reserve fleet until sold for scrap in 1986.
