Item Description

Presented in its entirety, this is a complete 132 of 132 holding of the 2000 Gym Challenge expansion, the concluding chapter of Wizards of the Coast's Gym subset and the release that cemented Giovanni, Blaine, Koga, and Sabrina as cornerstone figures of the early competitive and collectible Pokémon TCG. The set is delivered in full, encompassing the complete holofoil rainbow, every non-holo rare, the full common and uncommon run, and the entire Trainer and Energy complement. The offering is distinguished by the inclusion of both known print variations of Blaine's Charizard (#2/132) - a detail elaborated in its own section below and a defining feature of this lot's significance.

The Blaine's Charizard Error / Corrected Pairing

This offering presents one of the rarest and most historically significant configurations available to the advanced Wizards of the Coast collector: both the error and corrected print variants of Blaine's Charizard, side by side in a single holding.

The earliest print runs of Blaine's Charizard were released with a production error within the text of its Roaring Flames attack. In place of the intended Fire energy symbol required by the attack's mechanical logic, the card was printed with a Fighting energy symbol, an internally contradictory error on a Fire-type Pokémon whose entire attack economy depends on Fire energy attachment. The error was substantial enough to require formal errata from Wizards of the Coast, and subsequent print runs corrected the symbol to the proper Fire designation. The companion misprint, in which the word "energy" appears in lowercase rather than the intended capitalized "Energy," was never formally corrected and persists across both variants.

The error print is widely regarded among serious WOTC collectors as one of the most compelling and least-understood print variations of the entire vintage Pokémon era. Population data for graded examples remains thin, market liquidity is shallow, and eye-appeal examples surface at auction with notable infrequency. The corrected print, while the more commonly encountered of the two, holds its own structural scarcity as a function of Gym Challenge's overall production, a set whose unlimited run was markedly smaller than its Gym Heroes predecessor.

The significance of presenting both variants together, within an already complete 132-card set, cannot be overstated. The pairing transforms what would otherwise be a strong master-set holding into a single-lot study of one of the most consequential production errors in the Wizards of the Coast catalog, offering the acquirer both completion and the variant spread in one acquisition.

Investment Considerations

Gym Challenge sealed product has contracted materially in availability over the past several years, and complete unlimited sets have demonstrated sustained appreciation alongside the broader vintage WOTC category. The inclusion of the Fighting-symbol error variant introduces an additional axis of value independent of set-completion dynamics, as error cards in this tier continue to draw distinct buyer segments, dedicated error collectors, graded registry competitors, and investors seeking asymmetric exposure to underpriced WOTC anomalies. Complete sets accompanied by variant pairings of this caliber rarely surface intact at public auction.

A presentation-grade holding for the acquirer who understands that scarcity, narrative, and completeness compound in combination.

One of dozens of deeply curated, phenomenal Pokémon lots up for auction this week. A must have for any serious Pokémon collector or investor.
