Item Description

Meerschaum Pipe, David P. Ehrlich Company, Boston, Massachusetts and Two Clay Figural Pipes, Late 19th-Early 20th Century. The meerschaum pipe with 14k gold collar and amber stem, in a fitted velvet-lined leather case inscribed "David P. Ehrlich Co., Boston, Mass.;" the first clay pipe carved and painted as Uncle Sam and the second as a sprite or elf wearing a jester's hat.

Meerschaum pipe case: H: 2.625 in., W: 5.875 in., D: 1.875 in.

The David P. Ehrlich Company, an institution specializing in fine pipes, cigars and tobacco, was in business in Boston, Massachusetts from 1868-1968. They carved pipes from various materials including meerschaum, a white fossilized substance mined from the earth in Turkish Asia Minor.
