Item Description

Photographic Print Depicting Ulysses S. Grant with Signature, Rank and Note. The note penned to Colonel Ely Parker. handwritten "Col. Parker, City Point. I will be at City Point at 10:30 this evening. U.S. Grant, Lt. Col."

Frame: H: 20.125 in., W: 14.125 in., D: 0.5 in.

Ely S. Parker (1828-1895) was a Seneca Indian born on the Tonawanda Reservation in Indian Falls, New York. A close friend of General Ulysses S. Grant, he served as his adjutant and military secretary during the Civil War, assisting with correspondence, orders and other administrative tasks. Grant and Parker were together at City Point, Virginia, which served as Grant's Union headquarters during the siege of Petersburg. City Point was a strategic location for Grant's Union Army, providing supplies and serving as a command center.
