Story Arc: "Parallax View"
This arc features a significant confrontation between the original Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (then known as the villainous Parallax), and his successor, Kyle Rayner.
Issue #63 (Part 1): Hal Jordan returns to Earth, seeking to reclaim the last remaining Green Lantern ring from Kyle Rayner. When Kyle refuses, a brutal battle ensues. Sensing Kyle's imminent defeat, the Guardian Ganthet teleports away to summon reinforcements from the Justice League, including Superman, Flash, and Martian Manhunter.
Issue #64 (Part 2): The battle escalates as the Justice League arrives to help Kyle. Hal Jordan, fueled by his immense power as Parallax, manages to defeat several heroes, even using a nuclear explosion construct to take out Superman. However, the conflict ultimately forces Hal to confront the depth of his fall from heroism, leading to moments of profound regret
Historical Significance
The Parallax Entity: While initially written as a simple descent into madness for Hal Jordan following the destruction of Coast City, this era was later retconned in Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004). It was revealed that Hal was actually being possessed by Parallax, a parasitic fear entity that had been imprisoned within the Green Central Power Battery for eons.
Passing the Torch: These issues are pivotal in establishing Kyle Rayner's legitimacy as the new Green Lantern, as he is forced to defend his position against the very legend he replaced.
