A distinguished set of eight carved mahogany dining chairs in the English Chippendale taste, produced by Maitland-Smith. Each chair displays a finely pierced and scrolling splat back beneath a shaped crest rail, with serpentine upholstered seats raised on cabriole legs terminating in carved ball-and-claw feet. The warm mahogany frames show attractive figure and careful hand-finished detailing characteristic of the maker’s traditional craftsmanship.
The set comprises two armchairs and six side chairs and has remained together as a cohesive suite. Upholstered in a light neutral textile.
The chairs stand on boldly carved cabriole legs terminating in classic ball-and-claw feet, with carved knees and shaped aprons, reinforcing the high-quality traditional craftsmanship typical of American Chippendale Revival furniture of the mid- to late-20th century. The armchairs echo the same carving with shaped arms and scrolled handholds.
Dimensions: 21"W x 18 1/4"D x 41 1/2"H floor to seat 18"
Condition: Structurally sound and sturdy. Visible staining and discoloration to the light upholstery throughout ALL chairs. Minor surface wear, small nicks, and finish rubs consistent with age and dining use. Upholstery would benefit from cleaning or reupholstery to presentation level. Frames remain handsome and well-preserved overall. Needs reupholstery.
