Pierre Guillaume Metzmacher (1815-1890) was a French engraver known for creating works after the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael. He produced steel engravings of several of Raphael's famous paintings.
Key examples of Metzmacher's engravings after Raphael include:
"Saint Margaret" This line engraving reproduces Raphael's painting of Saint Margaret, which is held in the Louvre Museum. The original painting was given by Pope Leo X to King François I of France in 1518.
"Portrait of Rafaël" Metzmacher also created a steel engraving that served as a portrait of Raphael himself, based on a self-portrait or another likeness of the painter.
"Architectural Ornament" He produced engravings of architectural studies and ornaments related to Raphael's work, such as those from the Vatican Loggias.
These engravings were produced in the 19th century, often published in Paris, and are found in various museum collections and archives, including the Wellcome Collection and the Virtual Museum Arthelon.
