Item Description

Carved scrimshaw was a form of folk art created by sailors, particularly whalers, during the 18th and 19th centuries. Scrimshaw is made by engraving designs into whale teeth, bones, or walrus tusks. The engravings were often filled with lamp black or colored pigments to make the designs stand out as in this one. The art form developed as a way for sailors to pass the time on long voyages, which could last
for years. Scrimshaw pieces were often given to loved ones as souvenirs. This one features a seaside landscape with sailboat and house on one side and two wonderful female sirens on the other. Size 4 L x 2 D x 1.25 H
