Antique Chinese Export Lacquer Tea Caddy Black & Gold Octagonal Box W/ Inner Lid 6.5"

antique Chinese export lacquered tea caddy, featuring an elegant octagonal form with detailed black and gold decoration. The exterior is richly adorned with traditional landscape scenes, figures, trees, and decorative borders executed in fine gilt over a red and black lacquer ground.

The hinged lid opens to reveal the interior storage compartment along with the removable inner lid insert, traditionally used to help seal and preserve tea. The interior of the lid and box are finished in dark lacquer with decorative gilt accents.

Chinese lacquer tea caddies like this were produced for the export trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, used to store valuable loose-leaf tea. Today they are highly sought after by collectors of Asian antiques, tea-related objects, and decorative lacquerware.
