Powerful figurative pencil drawing by Yary Livan, titled The Hunger of Peace (2002). The composition depicts a young child cradling a sleeping infant, rendered with sensitive detail and emotional gravity. Inscribed “Cambodia 7/1/02” and signed by the artist.

Professor Yary Livan studied traditional Cambodian arts at the Royal University of Fine Arts both before and after the War. In the 1980’s he taught art in a refugee camp on the Thai border. He was part of a ceramics project run by the Japanese Art Organization in Battambang 1991-1993, and until he left Cambodia in 2001 worked in both ceramics and painting. His specializations include portraits, landscapes, and temple decorations. Presently he is a visiting artist at CMAA Lowell, where he is design director for the New Year’s Festival.
