Historic Civil War–era document lot including an original Commonwealth of Pennsylvania military commission issued under Governor Andrew G. Curtin.
The commission appoints James P. Helms of Schuylkill County as Second Lieutenant, Company A, 48th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, dated January 8, 1863, Harrisburg. The document features ornate typography and an original red embossed state seal.
Also included is a partial issue of “The Citizen” newspaper (Murfreesboro, N.C.) dated April 18, 1861, containing early Civil War content including the headline “War At Last” referencing the attack on Fort Sumter.
Document measures 13" x 17".
Condition: Commission shows age toning, folds, edge wear, and some tearing. Newspaper is fragile with losses, stains, and separations. Sold as historical documents as shown.
