Significance: First published between 1848 and 1861, this is one of the most famous examples of "Whig history," highlighting the steady progress of British liberty and parliamentary government. Binding: These are bound in half-leather or full calf with ornate gilt tooling on the spines and red leather title labels. 2. Cooper's Novels (2 Volumes) The two volumes on the left are part of a series of "Cooper's Novels" by American author James Fenimore Cooper. Significance: Cooper was one of the earliest major American novelists, best known for his frontier adventure stories featuring the character Natty Bumppo.
