Item Description

This art form, known as verre églomisé, involves painting an image on the back of a glass pane so it can be viewed from the front. The painting depicts a traditional Japanese landscape scene with two prominent cranes in the foreground, figures of people—possibly geishas or other historical figures—on the right side, traditional architecture and houses, a body of water with small boats, a prominent dark tree, and stylized distant mountains or hills resembling Mount Fuji in some related artworks. The piece originates from East Asia, likely Japan, and exemplifies reverse paintings made for the Western market, particularly during the 18th-19th centuries. It is framed in an original dark, possibly lacquered, wooden frame with some decorative elements.
