Item Description

These are Colombian half dollars, the first commemorative coins issued by the United States. They were initially sold for $1 a piece to fund the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's landing in the New World.
The obverse features a bust of Christopher Columbus designed by Charles Barber.
The reverse depicts Columbus's ship, the Santa Maria, above two hemispheres, designed by George T. Morgan.
