Harold (Hal) McIntosh was born in Canada to Scottish immigrant parents. He studied under L.L. Fitzgerald at the Winnipeg School Of Art. After the war he eventually relocated to New York City where he found work not as a fine artist, but as an illustrator. McIntosh's 'scratchboard' work was in great demand, and his career flourished - he was for example, a mainstay of editor Norman Cousin's Saturday Review Of Books, where his uniformly-excellent cover art was almost ubiquitous. In 1956, 'Hal' and his wife Ruth moved to the Northwest corner of Connecticut: his intention was to take on freelance illustration work in order to earn a living whilst he simultaneously worked on his fine art. Tragedy struck when his wife died in December 1961 at the age of 46. After Ruth's death, McIntosh seemed to find his solace in the country life. In his art, he turned the depiction of the natural world: Sharon Audubon Society was within walking distance and he developed a fascination with the native birds and the landscape they inhabited. He married again, and the success of his ornithological paintings meant that he was able to phase out the Manhattan freelance work. His wife, Beverly, opened a gallery in Sharon which was intended (largely) as a venue from where to sell her husband's works. His work was in great demand elsewhere, appearing in a widely-ranged series of shows and galleries. He died in late June 1981, an admired traditionalist with an evident love of his subject matter and a full grasp of the techniques he employed.
