Fossilized tortoise shell, likely belonging to the genus Stylemys, specifically Stylemys nebrascensis.
It is an Oligocene-aged land tortoise fossil commonly found in the White River Badlands of South Dakota and Nebraska.
The species name means "pillar turtle of Nebraska," a reference to its sturdy, column-like limbs.
Like modern tortoises, Stylemys nebrascensis did not have teeth and likely ate low-growing shrubs, grasses, cacti, and insects.
The shell is a modified rib cage and vertebral column.
