Item Description

American School (C.H.S). Continental "Schooner Hannah Capt. Nicholson Broughton Master," 19th Century. Watercolor on paper, signed "C.H.S." lower left, (15.25 x 19.125 inches, sight); housed in a lemon gold frame.

Frame: H: 18.25 in., W: 22.25 in., D: 1 in.

The schooner "Hannah" was the first armed vessel of the American Revolution, authorized by the Continental Congress to sail under Continental pay and control. Acquired on August 24, 1775 hr first captain was Nicholson Broughton, a captain in the army. She was utilized to aid George Washington in the siege of Boston by capturing British provision ships heading to Boston harbor. She was run aground by the British Royal Navy sloop "Nautilus" on October 10, 1775 near a small fort in Beverly, Massachusetts, and was soon after decommissioned by George Washington.
