This piece is the nicest Victorian-style needlepoint I have ever seen. The craft/art form was extremely popular during the 1940s through the 1960s. This one features a lush, multi-colored floral bouquet—prominently showcasing red and white roses—set against a deep ebony (black) background. The high-contrast color palette was specifically designed to make the floral pigments appear more vibrant and "pop" from the frame.
Artistry: The artist used a sophisticated range of thread shades to create a "painterly" effect, using gradients of green for the leaves and soft periwinkle blues and yellows to give the central white flower dimension.
Framing: The piece is housed in a decorative gilt-wood frame with an antiqued wash. The ornate scrolling and "shabby chic" patina suggest it was intended to serve as a focal point in a traditional or Hollywood Regency-style interior.
Consistent with age and use.
