Item Description

Artist: Henry Wilkinson.

Medium: Hand-colored Etching.

Edition: This is number 103 of 150 (as seen in the bottom left "103/150").

Signature: You can see his pencil signature in the bottom right and his name engraved within the copper plate on the left.

Description
This piece is a classic example of 20th-century British sporting art. It depicts two English Setters (identifiable by their distinct "belton" spotting and feathered coats) on point in a rustic, autumnal field.

The composition captures a moment of high tension:

The Action: A Ring-necked Pheasant has just been flushed from the brush and is shown in mid-flight on the left side of the frame.

The Style: Wilkinson was a master of the "drypoint" technique, which uses a sharp needle to scratch lines directly into a copper plate. This creates the soft, "burred" lines you see in the dogs' fur and the surrounding trees.

The Coloring: After the black-and-white image was printed, it was meticulously hand-tinted with watercolors, giving the pheasant its characteristic red and iridescent blue head.
