Item Description

engraving of George Hamilton-Gordon, the 4th Earl of Aberdeen. He was a Scottish statesman and served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 to 1855.
He was known for his work as Foreign Secretary, where he settled boundary disputes between Canada and the United States with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty (1842) and the Oregon Treaty (1846).
He became Prime Minister of a coalition government of Peelites, Whigs, radicals, and Irish members, which included notable figures like Gladstone and Palmerston.
His government was largely defined by foreign affairs and the country's involvement in the Crimean War, which ultimately led to his resignation in 1855.
