Throughout 2024, the value of any given Pokémon card fluctuated considerably. Historically, however, some cards have consistently held high value due to their rarity and demand. Here are 5 consistently high value cards that complete any serious collector's deck:

  1. 1999 First Edition Base Set Charizard (Holo):

Often regarded as the most iconic and valuable Pokémon card, the First Edition Base Set Charizard in Gem Mint condition (graded PSA 10) has sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Its combination of rarity, popularity, and iconic status makes it highly sought after.

  2. 1998 Japanese Promo "Illustrator" Pikachu:

This card is one of the rarest Pokémon cards ever produced. This card was originally produced as a prize. Awarded to winners for a series of contests run in Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic between 1997 and 1998. Only 39 copies were originally given out, and in pristine condition, it has fetched over a million dollars at auction.

  3. 2006 Pokémon World Championships No. 2 Trainer Card:

This card was awarded to the runner-up in the 2006 World Championships. Its rarity and significance in the competitive scene make it very valuable.

  4. 1999 First Edition Base Set Shadowless Charizard (Holo):

Similar to the First Edition Charizard, this card lacks the shadow on the right side of the Pokémon’s image, making this card rarer. A Gem Mint version of this card can command a very high price, as the market demand has remained consistent.

  5. 2002 Pokémon Japanese Promo "Gold Star" Rayquaza:

Known for its stunning artwork and limited print run, this card features Rayquaza with a gold star and is highly coveted among collectors. In pristine condition, it can reach substantial values.

On AuctionNinja, DGW Collectibles & Estates holds the badge as our highest earning Pokémon card seller. In July of 2024, they sold this 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard for $8k!

For many, Pokemon cards evoke cherished memories of childhood, serving as a tangible link to a time when Pokémon first captured their imaginations. The intricate artwork and diverse card designs also appeal to those who appreciate the artistry of any given card. Just like any collectible, the cards have considerable investment potential, as certain cards can appreciate significantly in value over time. The blend of personal nostalgia, aesthetic appreciation, and financial opportunity shift Pokémon from a childhood fascination, to a practical endeavor.
