Though the value of silver has increased over the last three years, recent drops have caused collectors and investors to think twice.  According to Yahoo Finance, Silver May futures opened at $79.85 per ounce on April 21st, a 0.2% decrease compared with Monday’s closing price of $80.04. The price of silver fell to $78.96 by 6:40 a.m. ET.

The reasons for this change could relate to several factors:

Industrial Demand: Silver is widely used in electronics and solar panels, so these industries increase demand.

Investor Sentiment: Prices are influenced by economic events, inflation concerns, and investors seeking safe assets.

Currency Fluctuations: Since silver is traded in U.S. dollars, changes in the dollar’s value affect its price.

Market Liquidity: Because the silver market is smaller than gold, its prices tend to be more volatile.

Yahoo finance further clarifies that price fluctuations are highly influenced by current events:

"The primary concern for traders is that the Iranian conflict increases the inflation risk in the U.S. A prolonged inflation cycle could prompt a rise in interest rates, which tends to reduce pricing and demand for gold." (Ivana Pino, Yahoo Finance)

Knowing how sensitive silver prices are in conjunction with domestic and international affairs, AuctionNinja sellers must stay vigilant for abrupt changes in their auction outcomes. Willingness to pay above scrap value for items that have no other intrinsic resale market might warrant a second look at the bidder's activity.
