AN: How would you describe your taste/style?
CD: Well that’s a tough one! If I were to define my taste, I would say I lean heavily into the Eclectic/Mid-Century Modern vibes. You can find touches of bohemian, hygge (cozy cozy!) and classic danish pieces throughout my apartment. I love a good mix of wood tones and a whole lot of texture, whether that comes from throw pillows and blankets or woven rugs. I have also found I love a dash of rich color but my staple pieces generally stay pretty neutral. I’m a serial re-arranger and love to shop my home, so keeping my base furniture pieces earth-toned gives me room to play with color in accessories and decor.
Cozy, Neutral Living Room | Get the Look: Coffee Table , Floor Lamp, Landscape Art, Landscape Art 2
AN: What got you interested in secondhand, vintage and antique items?
CD: When I moved into my first apartment, I didn’t have much money to play with. I loved the concept of an intentional and curated space, but some of the unique pieces I obsessed over I just couldn’t afford. That’s when I started hunting Goodwill on a weekly basis. I actually remember the first thing I thrifted that I fell in love with - a black angular MCM floor lamp. It lives in my bedroom - 4 years later. I quickly learned that building a space with secondhand items brings so much character and narrative to a room. I am really into repurposing and bringing new life to pieces. I've DIY-ed countless pieces in my home, from my bar cart to my coffee table, and they are some of my favorites! I think vintage art is priceless, and so is that feeling when you find an exceptional piece in need of a new home, on the cheap. I get MAJOR fomo (fear of missing out) when thrifting, so most weekends you’ll catch me first in line for the shops.
Mid-Century Office Vibes | Get the Look: Dresser/Credenza, Room Size Oriental Rug , Mirror, Still Life Oil Painting
AN: What are the one or two things that you always find yourself bidding on?
CD: Art, art, art! I have an infinite love for antique artwork and I think it beats the trendy pieces you find at HomeGoods every time. There are always unique paintings and prints on auction and I just can’t help myself. Chairs and stools tend to catch my eye because the styles you see on AN are just impossible to find elsewhere. The beauty of auctions is the one-of-a-kind nature of it and you can find some showstopping chairs if you dig around. Lastly, vintage rugs! However, I have never pulled the trigger due to my lack of ability to make a decision on one. They are all so beautiful. If you're looking for an authentic vintage rug, online auctions are the way to go!
Chic, Minimalist Gallery Wall | Get the Look: Record Player, Lamp, Vase, Clock
AN: What's your favorite AuctionNinja purchase?
CD: That’s easy! My first authentic MCM piece, I found on AN. It is a leather tufted footstool with teak legs and it has been in every room of my home. It was actually the first thing I purchased and it had me hooked. I even remember picking it up and just feeling absolutely giddy over the whole experience.
Boho Meets Mod Bedroom | Get the Look: Stool, Rattan Bed
AN: What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased through an estate sale or online auction?
CD: I’d have to go with my chrome Herman Miller replica dining chairs. I searched and searched for some super funky statement chairs for my small dining nook. I wanted something with personality, and when I found them, they legitimately stopped me in my tracks. Although not everyone's taste with the extreme modernism, they were MADE for my space and even better - 50 bucks a pop!
Dining Nook | Get the Look: Mirror, MCM/Vintage Bar Cart (mine is a DIY), Teak Tray, Glassware/Vintage Ice Bucket, Centerpiece
AN: Any tips or advice for AuctionNinja newbies?
CD: Always place the bid. You will regret it. If you find that piece you love, don’t question your gut. Second, set text reminders so you don’t miss out! You can get alerts 10 minutes before a lot closes and it also allows you to get the best deal. I try not to set max bids days in advance because I have no idea how high the price will drive up.
