Published in September 1938 as war loomed, this French volume Photographie surveys European photography of the late 1930s through heliogravure reproductions and critical essays by editor Jean Selz. As Fascism rose and conflict threatened, the book highlights photography adopting avant-garde techniques and aesthetic ambition in various “new visions” movements. Works featured range from Brassaï’s dream-like Parisian street scenes and Florence Henri’s bold geometric abstractions, to social documentary capturing labor and poverty. Selz situated imagery by Man Ray, Germaine Krull, Herbert Bayer and others within photography’s expanding interwar presence in fine art institutions. As an early scholarly attempt at serious study of photography’s widening creative production and influence approaching WWII, Photographie endures as an important historical touchstone.
