Item Description

Wilson, Charles. Roots of America: A Travelogue of American Personalities. Morrow Published by N.Y.: Funk & Wagnalls, 1936. First edition. Illustrated with b/w images by Arthur Rothstein & others. HC; No jacket. Light wear. Published in 1936, this first edition travelogue by Charles Wilson offers profiles of notable Americans alongside photographs by artists like Arthur Rothstein documenting Depression-era federal relief programs. Combining urban portraits and rural Americana, the images of Rothstein and others illustrate Wilson’s biographical essays on presidents, inventors, activists and industrialists - subjects intended to represent the diverse traits and origins underpinning national character. Released the same year as Rothstein’s work for Roy Stryker’s seminal FSA photography project, Roots of America provides an early example of photo-documentary work elevating empathy for Depression-stricken Americans during the 1930s.
