Item Description

4 titles. Hosoe, Eikoh. UNTITLED 42. The Friends of Photography, 1985. This 1985 monograph published by San Francisco’s respected Friends of Photography gallery features abstract, psychologically charged nudes and still lifes by noted postwar Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe. Known for his gritty images of subcultures and collaborations with dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, the book reveals Hosoe’s departure into private symbolic imagery influenced by dance, death, eroticism and dreams. The darkroom-manipulated works visualize themes of mortality and transcendence. UNTITLED 42 provides important exposure for Hosoe’s lesser-known experimental techniques outside street photography.

The Friends of Photography. LIGHT YEARS : THE FRIENDS OF PHOTOGRAPHY 1967-1987. The Friends of Photography, 1988. Published on the occasion of its 20th anniversary in 1988, LIGHT YEARS documents the history of San Francisco’s pioneering Friends of Photography gallery and educational center for promoting fine art recognition of photography. Establishing new standards in the presentation and collecting of 20th century photographic prints, the institution hosted Edward Weston’s first major retrospective in 1948 and gave early shows to Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and other greats. This monograph charts the gallery’s exhibitions, publications, and classes through 150 black and white illustrations and historical essays regarding its prominent influence.

Szarkowski, John, and James Alinder. EW 100 Centennial essays in Honor of Edward Weston. The Friends of Photography, 1986. Marking iconic modernist photographer Edward Weston’s 100th birthday in 1986, this monograph anthology features reflective critical essays on Weston’s life and work by John Szarkowski, Charis Wilson, and other luminaries, accompanied by 100 tritone reproductions spanning his 8-decade career. Published by The Friends of Photography which gave Weston his first major solo exhibition in 1948, the volume provides a valuable scholarly retrospective on his relentless experimental visions of nudes, landscapes, shells and vegetables that pushed photography into the fine art realm.

The Friends of Photography. DON WORTH: PHOTOGRAPHS 1955-1985. The Friends of Photography, 1986. Spotlighting a lesser-recognized but revolutionary American photographer, this 1986 Friends of Photography monograph surveys Don Worth’s pre-digital experiments in abstracting and manipulating photographic images. Grouped in series, his works capture luminous light patterns, evocative motion blurs, landscapes distorted through a plastic lens, and more. Breaking conventions in favor of process and sensation, Worth’s images move photography away from faithful representations toward more subjective, individualistic visions. The book gives important validation to Worth’s contributions expanding artistic creative possibilities in photography. Generally VG, though the EW book cover has an edge tear.
