Item Description

HC DJ , dust jacket edgeworn, chipped; book has light wear. A promo flier laid-in for copies of this book offered by Aperture— seems they ended up with a limited number of the originals. Aaron Siskind: Photographs brought important exposure to his abstract, emotionally evocative brand of photography. Previously, Siskind was known mainly as a social documentary photographer for his work with the New York Photo League in the 1930s. This groundbreaking collection revealed a new creative direction, featuring tight crop photographs of weathered walls, peeling paint, and other found textures and patterns that spoke to themes of memory, fragility, and the passage of time. The images exemplified photography’s potential as a fine art form and inspired new ambition in the medium among Siskind’s contemporaries and students.
