Item Description

Paris Incendie, 1871; Album of historically important albumen photographs of the ruins of Paris, E. Ladrey .. N.p., n.p, 1871. Original book with text and 12 (of the original 20) mounted albumen photographs, loose. ONLY 12 images of the original 20, as found. Overall condition of images is good or better. One of the great documentary publications and a landmark work of photojournalism. AS IS.
Ladrey's images depict neighborhoods destroyed by French authorities crushing the revolutionary 1871 Paris Commune uprising, recording the post-battle wreckage, with blown-out buildings taking on haunting dignity devoid of human presence. As landmark early news photography, Ladrey bore factual witness to the violent quashing of working class communal control over the city. Standing as poignant tableaux, the album --even incomplete--remains among the most forceful visual testaments of French national forces brutally demolishing local progressive governance. The haunting scenes of destruction arguably carry portents of the warfare that would scar Europe in the 20th century; capturing a discrete 19th century event in the Paris Commune, glints of modern mass violence undoubtedly flicker within Ladrey's visions of urban destruction. The albumen prints harbor shadows and premonitive echoes of the 20th century’s coming mechanized ruination. SHIPPING OPTIONS AVAILABLE.
