Stunning Handmade Tooled Leather Low Table, Coffee Table With 4 Matching Stools - Lima Peru Cesar Sotomayor

Handmade Mohena Wood and Leather 'Andean Heritage' motif, Inca, Cusco - The leather tooling is so deep and thick it almost looks like a wood carving.

Table is 35 inches across and stools are 18 inches round - table is 17.75 inches tall

Set of South American - midcentury coffee table with 4 stools designed by Peruvian master craftsman, Cesar Sotomayor de la Cruz, circa 1980s ?, Peru. This set is made of solid tropical hardwood and thick carved tooled saddle leather that is embossed with Mayan patterns. Looks rather new - Some age-appropriate wear to the stool and legs; the leather is in really good condition.

I believe that the god on the table and chairs are images of Viracocha, the supreme Inca god, known by various names like Huiracocha, Wiraqoca, and Wiro Qocha, was revered as the creator of the earth, heavens, sun, moon, and all living beings. As the father of Inca deities, he completed his cosmic work and embarked on a journey, imparting wisdom and civilization before vanishing across the Pacific, with a promise to return. During his absence, lesser deities attended to human affairs, while Viracocha observed the progress of his creations from afar. Referred to by descriptive titles like Ilya (light) and Ticci (beginning), this omnipresent creator also went by Wiraqoca Pacayacaciq (instructor). Legend holds that humans were Viracocha's second attempt, preceded by giants made from stone during an age of darkness. Unruly giants faced a flood as punishment, with only two surviving and others transforming back into stone, leaving imposing remnants at sites like Tiahuanaco and Pukará.
