Mike Krise is a well known regional artist who's many talents include trinket boxes carved totem poles, paintings and drawings. The few lucky enough to acquire his art cherish it. The majority of Mike Krise work never leaves the reservation as the Squaxin tribe tend to hoard his pieces and with their our museum they can never have enough of his work. His subject matter is like no other native artist, who typically follow a geometric pattern, a lot are done in black & white and many look similar in appearance. Mike's art shares insights to some of their native traditions. Generally the subject of Mike's art is much more colorful then the normal and subject matter often unique and unusual but perhaps most my favorite facet of his art is when he adds a humorous side to many of his works. At 73 years old and recently having a kidney removed, the days of carving totem poles and diving for gooey duck are behind him but I intend to inspire to continue staying busy and creating. Seeing the appreciation non tribal people have for his art and the accompanying small revenue has him ready to tap into many other topics to paint that I am sure you will love.
We're even talking about new adventures like the time we decided to find the lost treasure of George Washington Bush one of the first couple settlers to Puget Sound around 1850. Bush stashed a sum of over a quarter million dollars worth of gold and silver coins and bullion in the false bottom of one of the dozen wagons he brought here. Ironically when he arrived with the other settler named Simmonds there wasn't anywhere to spend money. Within a year the crops he grew needed by the others who followed and Bush had all the money he'd need. When Bush died suddenly of an antiserum the family had never been told where he hid it and it has never been found. Mike and I decided to set out and find it a while back. We proceeded to cracked the 160 year mystery in our first half hour. Or so we thought.
