A fascinating book examining Phallic Art in Japan and itβs meaning. See description below. English and JapaneseJapanese- Japan, like both Greece and Tibet-countries it in other ways resembles as well-is extraordinarily rich in historical remains. Not only are there buildings and art objects from the most remote periods, but also the common carpenter's saw has not been much changed since the fourteenth century, and people still wear eighteenth-century footwear; one may see in Japan T'ang dynasty dancing and hear court music from Korea's Silla period; drama from the fifteenth century is commonly performed, and there are folk festivals whose origins are in pre-history. It is not surprising then that in Japan, a country that saves and uses its past, one should still glimpse the lineaments of the earliest of all religions, and may, in this century, find its spirit still alive. In writing this text, I am much indebted-in particular, to the books of Genji Kato; to the as yet unpublished volume by the late U. A. Casal of Kobe, certainly the most complete investigation in any language, and from which I have learned some of the details concerning utagaki and the modern matsuri; to Yuji Konno, who helped me read my source materials; to Clare Lee Colegrove, who gave me many helpful suggestions; and - of course - to Kenkichi Ito himself without whose authority and interest this book would never have been written at all.
