Item Description

A wonderful estate fresh oil on board painting by listed artist Alex Poplaski. The painting from the 1970s has its original receipt in the reverse and is titled ‘Fall Color’. This great painting measures 12 1/2” by 15 1/2” framed. The colors are wonderful and vibrant and the painting would make an excellent addition to any home.

A noted Colchester, Connecticut landscape artist, Alex Poplaski was born July 6, 1906 in the Ukraine. He was the son of Anthony and Alice Poplaski. The family immigrated to the United States in 1913, just prior to World War I.

With the family settlement in Colchester in 1919, he was able to follow his interest in drawing and study with James G. McManus and Bertram G. Bruestle, two noted artists of the Old Lyme school. Being in the vicinity of Old Lyme also allowed him to know and be influenced by many of the artists associated with that area.

Painting almost exclusively outdoors, the artist found inspiration locally and throughout nearby Vermont, Massachusetts, and Nova Scotia. In an interview in 1984 he commented on his popularity, stating: "I paint what people have seen and where they've been. I think that's why they want to buy (my work)." Yet his greatest enjoyment seemed to be the acceptance his paintings received. "My biggest kick is seeing people who enjoy my work," he stated. "That's the whole deal."

The artist exhibited his New England scenes for many years, winning numerous awards. He was a member of the Old Lyme Art Association, where he began showing his work in 1960, and served as its Vice-President from 1976 to 1979. Other memberships included the Academy of Fine Arts of Norwich, Connecticut, and the Clinton Art Association.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Poplaski worked for many years as an auto body mechanic, at one time owning Al's Auto Body in Colchester. Upon his retirement in 1963, he found more time to concentrate on his art. He was also occasionally able to teach others, commenting: "I tell them to forget what they've learned in school and just go by what is inside here," he stated pointing to his head.

After a career that spanned more than 55 years, the artist died on February 5, 1988.
