Item Description

This is a highly detailed, original Frederick Wetzel watercolor painting of a brilliant orange and black Baltimore Oriole on a willow branch. Wetzel's intricate brushwork is a marvel. His feather work is amazing. It is a nicely matted piece, and in a brown wooden frame.

In 2007, it was purchased from an antique store in Pennsylvania. We have included a photo of the receipt, which was taped to the back of the painting.

Frederick Wetzel was a highly acclaimed and accomplished American artist who passed away recently after a long and fruitful career. His love of painting began as a teen, when he began visiting Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. He enjoyed watching birds of prey in flight, so much so that birds became his main interest throughout his life. He painted countless songbirds, eagles, owls, hawks, waterfowl, wildlife, and landscapes through this career. Fuertes and Roland were two of his early influences. His preferred to work in watercolor, but he also created many stunning oil paintings of large animals and birds. By his own estimation , he created over 3,700 original paintings in his lifetime, and was still painting at the time of his passing at the age of 84. Fred was enthusiastic about teaching others and sharing his artistic knowledge; he maintained a large and loyal group of students throughout his career.

From the artist's website:
"Fred Wetzel received his B.S. in Biology from  Kutztown University. His major area of specialization is Ornithology working  mostly with birds of prey. He was Natural History Curator for the Lehigh County Cultural Center and Assistant Curator at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, Pa. He has been teaching  art privately around the country for the past 23  years and has run seminars in Plen Aire painting in Maine, Wyoming, Paris and Italy. He received his art instruction privately under Conrad Roland who was himself a student of  Louis Agassiz Fuertes.

He has exhibited at the William Penn Memorial  Museum in Harrisburg Pa., the Everhart Museum in Scranton, Pa., the Reading Museum in Reading, Pa. and the St. Augustine Art Association in St. Augustine,  Fla. His paintings hang in the collections of the Everhart and Reading Museums  and in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
Mr Wetzel's paintings have been reproduced in  numerous publications in the United States and Europe. He illustrated 'The View From Hawk Mountain' published by Scribners and 'The Mountain and the Migration' published by Hawk Mountain."

CRONE AND HAG
You’ll have to guess which one of us the Crone and which is the Hag. Suffice it to say, we’ve been selling antiques for a L O N G Time. You never know what the Crone and Hag will dig up. Always scroll through the entire auction.

Please don’t ask the Crone or the Hag to help you carry your items to your car, or strap them in. We’re old and can’t put our frail constitutions through the rigors of item transport. Besides, it’s against regulations. If you bought something heavy, or bulky, bring a friend to help you. It will make the drive to pick up more fun, and your friend can marvel at your exquisite purchase. It will give you something to talk about on the ride home. We also won’t have enough wrapping materials, boxes or bags at pick up. Please come prepared.

We never hide a piece’s glorious imperfections. These items are old and have the mellow shadow of time on them. We try our best to provide meticulous documentation and photography of all damage and wear on what we sell. You will not be disappointed on pick-up day. The Poisoned apple 🍎 pear 🍐 are for size only and not included.
