Krasnyansky was a prominent architect and watercolorist when he left the U.S.S.R. for the United States in 1975. He pioneered a new watercolor technique by introducing paper texture into his creative process. Through experimentation, he developed this dynamic component of his art, making him one of the first artists to elevate the expressive possibilities of the watercolor medium to a level usually associated with oil painting. Krasnyansky works in two distinct styles – one depicts traditional European cityscapes and the other, more recently developed, focuses on surreal figural compositions. Krasnyansky’s figures never depart from the recognizable. Altogether new in form, they contain echoes of the artist’s Eastern heritage.
