Hudson Valley, NY, painter Richard W. Prouse has been a sought after New York scenic artist for over 30 years, working on over 50 original Broadway productions. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was completely self-taught! A gifted artist, Prouse began his career at the young age of 18, creating scenery for music productions of Albuquerque's Civic White Opera Company. By age 23, he was already the scenic designer for the area's five major theatrical companies.
Moving to New York, he quickly established himself as one of the greats. His work includes painted backdrops for Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street, Grand Hotel, Phantom Of The Opera, Beauty & The Beast, and The Producers. He has collaborated Tony and Academy Award winning designers such as Tony Walton, Santo Loquasto, Robin Wagner, Maria Bjorgenson, and Bob Crowley.
Multi-talented, Richard also creates custom wedding gowns, paints oil portraits, designs and paints for the Center for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck, NY.
His nickname is "THE KING".
This is an early example of his work on canvas, dated 1985. 37 years ago, at such a young age, he showed amazing understanding of the human form and interesting composition. His attention to detail is astonishing, down to the last water droplet.

Notes: Please view the numerous, detailed photos for an accurate appraisal of this item's condition. This painting has two small slices that go through to the back, in the area of the upper left. There are photos of this damage. The vanish has yellowed. The staples holding the canvas onto the stretcher strips are rusty. (It may have been stored in a humid area for a time.) The back of the canvas is stained and dirty. There appears to be strands of dog or cat hair along the bottom area of the painting, particularly in the area of the red beach towel. The painting has scratches here and there.
