Physiognomy is the study of the temperament and character of an individual made from the shape, features and expressions of his face. It is Jean Gaspard Lavater (1741-1801), a theologian of Swiss origin, who is the greatest author on the subject. He made himself famous by his Physiognomische Fragmente , published in Leipzig in 1775-1778, in which he exhibited and developed theories physiognomonic. His work exerted a considerable influence at the time and especially in the nineteenth century.

Condition: the front cover and two blank pages have separated from the book, the spine is missing, toning and age appropriate wear. Interior pages are in remarkably good condition considering the book is over 200 years old.
