Small bibliographic reference cataloged by Michael Lort, D.D.; (1725-1790) Doctor of Divinity Trinity College, Cambridge at the age of 18 later progressing through the ranks of scholarly accolades to become domestic chaplain to Archbishop Cornwallis (the family that eventually had an heir surrender the American colonies). Most of his work was centered around the bibliographic assistance to other writing books and creating literary anecdotes. He created ‘manuscript lives’ which were extensively used by others. A rare signature with notations to a Latin text, he also read Greek, and Hebrew. He also wrote poetry of a religious flavor and Greek verses which bear his name. His library of notes and annotated books were sold at auction, this fragment came from that auction. His books and notes were so enriched with critical observations that his library achieved an astounding sum of 1,269 pounds sterling followed by another 401 pounds sterling on a subsequent auction over 5 of April to 14 of May in 1791 and all the prints over the six days for the 401 pounds sterling. He was described by Madame d’Arblay as a ‘good and very original physiognomy.’ Measures 5.25 by 2.0 inches. Toned, edge tattering, pencil notations of other hand, signed by him in his own hand with his notations on a reference with his catalog numbers. A rare item.
