Richard Allestree (1619-1681) was a prominent English clergyman and writer who is best known for his devotional works and moral treatises. While Allestree was a member of the Church of England, his religious views are not typically considered to align with those of the Puritans.
In fact, Allestree was known for his opposition to the Puritan movement, which sought to "purify" the Church of England by eliminating what it saw as vestiges of Catholicism and promoting a more austere form of Protestant worship. Allestree believed in a more moderate approach to religion, and he was critical of the Puritan emphasis on strict adherence to rules and regulations.
Allestree's most famous work, "The Whole Duty of Man," was published anonymously in 1658 and quickly became a bestseller. The book was a collection of moral and religious advice aimed at helping readers lead virtuous lives, and it was widely read and admired by Anglicans of all stripes.
While Allestree's views on religion may not have aligned with those of the Puritans, he was nonetheless a respected scholar and theologian in his own right, and his writings continue to be read and studied today.
Richard Allestree was an Anglican divine and academic who lived in England in the seventeenth century. In 1678, he published a book entitled "The Lively Oracles Given to Us, or The Christians Birth-right and Duty, in the custody and use of the Holy Scripture", which was printed at the Theatre in Oxford.
The book was a treatise on the proper use and interpretation of the Bible, emphasizing its importance in the life of a Christian. It was well received and widely read, and is considered an important work in the history of Biblical interpretation.
"The Lively Oracles" is notable for its clear and practical guidance on how to approach the Bible, and for its emphasis on personal study and understanding. It reflects the concerns and priorities of the Anglican church in the late seventeenth century, and remains a valuable resource for scholars and Christians today.
