(Association copy). Mark Harris. A Ticket for a Seamstress. 1958. First edition. Inscribed to Newbery Award winning author Scott O’Dell, best known for his first book “The Island of Blue Dolphins.” VG/VG.
Mark Harris (1922-2007) was an American author and professor of English literature, best known for his novels exploring American culture and sports. He was born in New York City and attended the University of Denver, where he earned his undergraduate degree. Harris then went on to study at the University of Iowa, where he received his Master's degree and Ph.D. in American Studies.
Harris began his writing career as a journalist, working for various publications including the New York Herald Tribune and Sports Illustrated. He gained widespread recognition with the publication of his debut novel, "Bang the Drum Slowly," in 1956. The book tells the story of a friendship between a baseball player and his catcher, exploring themes of loyalty and mortality.
One year later, in 1957, Harris published "A Ticket for a Seamstress," a novel set in post-World War II Europe. The book follows the journey of a young American soldier who falls in love with a Jewish seamstress, as they navigate the political and social upheavals of the era. The novel was praised for its insightful portrayal of European life after the war and its exploration of the complex issues of identity and morality.
