This first edition of "The Fate of Madame la TOUR: A Tale of Great Salt Lake" by Mrs. A.G. Paddock is a valuable addition to any collection of American literature and history. Published in 1881 by Fords, Howard, & Hulbert in New York, this book provides a unique perspective on life in Utah during the late 19th century.
Light shelf soiling and toning.
The book is bound in its original cloth publisher's binding and features spine lettering in gilt. The front cover is stamped with an image of the American flag and the Book of Mormon, with the same image stamped on the back. The appendix of the book presents an overview of Utah from 1870 to 1881, including an extensive section on references.
The author, Cornelia Paddock was a well-known figure who brought attention to the practices of the Mormons and gained recognition both domestically and globally. As a member of the Methodist faith, she was deeply disturbed by the concept of polygamy and believed it degraded the status of women. The establishment of Fort Douglas in 1862 by General Patrick Connor, located in the hills above Salt Lake City, marked the arrival of Protestant missionaries in Utah. Connor ensured that the fort always had a Protestant chaplain present. While Mormons were actively sending missionaries beyond the state, other religious organizations were also sending their own missionaries to spread their teachings, including in Utah.
