Mark Twain Joan Of Arc Vol. 1 (only)— sold because it has an interesting bookplate. Bookplate for Eva Le Gallienne (1899-1991)—approx. 5 x 3 inches, signed in the print (see below); light toning, pasted to inside cover which has faint foxing. Eva Le Gallienne was an English-born American stage actress, producer, and director. She began her career in the 1910s and became known for her interpretations of Shakespearean roles, such as Rosalind in "As You Like It" and Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet". She founded her own theater company, the Civic Repertory Theatre, in 1926 and directed several productions. Throughout her career, Le Gallienne also appeared in films and television shows, including "Resurrection" (1927) and "The Royal Family" (1977). She was recognized for her contributions to the theater with numerous awards, including a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1964.
A note on the artist: Waslav Richard Rychtarik (1894-1982) was a Czech-born American set and costume designer. He worked on numerous productions in the United States, including Broadway shows such as "The Three Musketeers" (1928) and "Camelot" (1960). Rychtarik was known for his innovative designs and attention to detail, which earned him critical acclaim throughout his career. He also worked as a teacher at the Yale School of Drama and the University of Texas at Austin. The bookplate is signed along lower left side and dated 1926; the border quotes Ibsen, in part.
The quote from Ibsen's play "The Master Builder" is:
Solness: "Homes for human beings, Hilda - not for ghosts, not for elves, nor yet for trolls. Homes for clearheaded, honest men and women."
Hilda: "But homes with high towers and pinnacles upon them - towering up towards the blue sky, as if to pierce it!"
Book is in fair condition; sold as is.
