Item Description

Inscribed presentation by Benton in vol. 1, to Lot M. Merrill (see below).
Landmark two-volume memoir titled "Thirty Years' View; or, A History of the Working of the American Government for Thirty Years, from 1820 to 1850," published in 2 parts, 1854 & 1856, this copy is a clean example of the publisher’s stamped cloth binding.

Thomas Hart Benton was a prominent American politician and statesman who served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri for thirty years, from 1821 to 1851.

Thirty Years' View" provides a firsthand account of Benton's experiences in the U.S. Senate during a period of significant political and social change in the United States. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the Missouri Compromise, the annexation of Texas, and the Mexican-American War.

Volume 1 is Inscribed to Lot Myrick Morrill (May 3, 1813 – January 10, 1883) a notable American statesman and accomplished politician who served in several prominent roles throughout his career. He was the 28th Governor of Maine, a United States Senator, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Ulysses S. Grant. Morrill was a proponent of hard currency over paper money, and his stance earned him widespread popularity among the American press and on Wall Street.

Morrill was known for his financial and political integrity, and he was often described as a dedicated public servant focused on serving the greater good rather than any particular political party. His contributions to public service were significant, and he was among a distinguished group of individuals who helped shape American politics in the mid-19th century. One of his notable contemporaries was Thomas H. Benton, who also served as a U.S. Senator during this time and was known for his passionate advocacy of westward expansion and territorial expansion.
