6 stapled booklets, 1928-1930, including Christ and the inferiority complex, Christ and Unemployment, and Moral Independence-- a snapshot of socially conscious religious thought during the onset of the Great Depression. Their focus on relating Christianity to timely psychological, economic, and ethical issues facing society reveals an attempt to make religious faith relevant to practical modern problems impacting American lives in that era. Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) was one of the most prominent American Protestant ministers of the early 20th century. He served as pastor of The Riverside Church in New York City, an interdenominational church founded by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Under Fosdick's leadership for nearly 30 years, Riverside Church became a vital center of progressive Christianity and social activism, dedicated to ecumenism, international cooperation, and advancing the social gospel. Fosdick made Riverside into one of New York's most influential modernist Protestant institutions.
