Incorporated April 1st, 1884 the Foundry and Machine Corporation consisted of a machine shop and other buildings as shown. They made the Plummer Steam Heater, for which they held the patent, and also manufacture castings of varied descriptions. The Steam Heater had a high demand, and the business of the company was well established. Mr. Orrin Morse was president of the company. Mr. William R. Barber, secretary and treasurer, was also the managing agent. Henry G. Leonard, L. H. Fuller, Edward Mullan, J. C. Nichols and George E. Shaw completed the board of directors. This corporation was formed with the special object of adding to the substantial interests of Putnam.
Based in Worcester, Massachusetts, Woodbury and Co. was established in the ealy1880s by John C. Woodbury, a member of the WPI class of 1876. In the early years, Woodbury was in a partnerships, with the original company being Kyes and Woodbury. Woodbury and Co. was well-known as a leader in industrial graphic logos. The company became particularly renowned for its "birds eye view" engravings of factories and commercial buildings that appeared in advertising and stationery throughout the country. The innovative use of a photogravure engraving process had much to do with the company's success. The company produced many collectible engravings such as first day covers and presidential portraits. Four generations of the Woodbury family owned and operated the company until its closure in 2001.
