Many years ago, woman used sad irons or flat irons to iron clothing. In earlier years, they were heated over an open fire or stove.
If you collect sad irons:
(1)Enterprise Mfg. collectible features two pointed sides With raised lettering on the top it reads; Enterprise Mfg. Co. Philadelphia, PA., three patent dates; Pat May 24 70 , Oct. 1. 67- (6 1/4"Long )
(2)Mrs Potts sad iron (manufactured 1876–1950 by American Machine). (5 1/2" Long)
Although these sad irons are missing their removable handles, They are fantastic Americana collectibles which could also be used as a door stop or a paper weight.
