Letter was written to Ellen M. Hyland born 6/20/1848 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts from her brother Edmond Lewis Hyland born 1843 died 1919 also born in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts . He was a member of company F 32nd Massachusetts. The letter was probably written in 1862 from Chestnut Hill near Boston where the company was defending Fort Warren in the Boston harbor. They went South to fight in June 18 62, and participated in battles including: second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, battle of the wilderness, cold Harbor, Petersburg, Appomattox courthouse.
He became a cobbler after the war.
