Item Description

Matisse, Henri (French, 1869-1954), Teeny (Duthuit #723), originally 1938, this edition printed in 1959, linocut in black ink, image size 11.75 x 8.8 inches, unframed. This work is from the edition of approximately 1500 published in XXe Siecle, signed and dated in the plate H.M. 38. Provenance: from the estate of the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, from 1969 to 1980. Alexina Teeny Duchamp (1906-1995) was the second wife of artist and chess player, Marcel Duchamp. She was born Alexina Sattler in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1906. In 1929 Teeny married Pierre Matisse, the eldest son of Henri Matisse- Henri Matisse was very fond of his daughter in law and this portrait depicts her.The estate had three copies all which I will be selling in the next several months-If there is any interest in more then one after auction end please contact me-
