Born in the Bronx in 1924, Harold Altman was an American painter and printmaker best known for his linear etchings and vibrant color lithographs. His prints of Central Park, the parks of Paris, and rural Pennsylvania can be found in museums and private collections throughout the world.
A prolific draftsman, Altman produced more than 1200 unique editions of lithographs and etchings during his tenure as an artist. Critics lauded his “mastery of endless variation on a simple theme,” and praised his ability to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Altman printed his first lithograph at the age of 12 and spent the next 65 years honing his craft. First working on his own presses, and later printing at esteemed ateliers in Paris, he developed a unique and highly-technical process that continued to evolve over decades.
